Focussing on yourself

One of the most common things that I am asked as a coach is: ‘How do I focus on myself, when there are so many other demands on my time?’
The first thing I advise is to stop feeling guilty for thinking about yourself. You are a person, you have feelings and you have the perfect right (and need) to remember that. I love the saying ‘You cannot pour from an empty cup’ because it is so true. If you give and give and give, and forget to hold a little time and space for yourself, you will have nothing left give.
The second thing is to let go of things that are not your responsibility. I took part in a training programme about ten years ago, and one of the most poignant things that I learned is that we carry our responsibilities around on our backs like pet monkeys. We care for those monkeys, we take them seriously and sometimes they can weigh us down and get the better of us. Remember to take care of your own ‘monkeys’ and if you are carrying any that are not yours, be sure to give them back to their owners – you have enough of your own to deal with!
We 'block' giving ourselves the care that we need in so many ways. But did you know that the word ‘February’ comes from the Latin ‘februa’, which means ‘to cleanse’? That means that this month is the perfect time to do some clearing out and to focus on YOU! Don't be afraid to let go of what doesn't serve you.
